Our Captain Swallowed a Kickball (black) vs. Brews on First (navy):
Brews on First was looking to start the season with two wins in a row and
solidify them as the dark horse to win this season’s PPC championship. And for
the second week in a row, they got off to a hot start in the 1st inning, thanks
to a monster 2-run home run by Brayden Quarry (get used to that name, you’re
going to hear it a lot this season). In the bottom of the 1st inning, OCSK got
their super speedy leadoff kicker, Lindie Sailor, on base and eventually around
to score after Erik Miller’s RBI double. Erik would try to come around and
score on the next play, but was thrown out at home. Brews on First struck again
in the 3rd inning when Sam Schultz knocked in two runs on a fielder’s choice
and Brayden Quarry pummeled his second 2-run home run. Brayden wasn’t done
though, and by the end of the night, he went 4 for 4 with 3 home runs and 7
RBIs. Defenses everywhere, beware!
Final Score: Brews on First 11, Our
Captain Swallowed a Kickball 2
Bazinga (red) vs. Hashtag Balls (forest green):
Hashtag Balls saw it coming, but
stopping it is a different story. Bazinga’s offense was literally unstoppable
in this one. Keith Hausam started off the damage with a 400 ft grand slam home
run all the way to the left field fence, giving Bazinga a hefty 5-0 lead after
just five batters. In the top of the 2nd inning, Hashtag Balls answered with a
couple singles that found a hole in the tight Bazinga defense. Lil Snatch
(Allison Snatchko) would then pound another single to score Alamo (Arlon Jackson),
breaking up the shut-out. Matt Howes and Keith Hausam had their lights-out
pitching though, and Hashtag Balls couldn’t seem to get any more offensive
rhythm going. Bazinga would put up 7 more runs in the 3rd inning (adding insult
to injury) thanks in part to a 2-RBI double by Joshua Smith.
Final Score: Bazinga
18, Hashtag Balls 1
Booze on First (indigo blue) vs. Kickelob Ultra (royal blue):
After a relatively quiet first inning, Booze on First blew this game
open in the 2nd inning with a total of 9 players coming up to kick. Jason
Mullis knocked in two with a single, and Marc O’Meara capped off the inning
with a 3-run home run to go up 7-2. Kickelob Ultra would claw their way back
into this game though, and in the top of the 5th inning Trentt Houghton blasted
an RBI double to the gap, scoring James Stuart to make it a 7-6 game. In the top
of the 7th inning, Kickelob Ultra’s Tucker Dezelan drove in the tying run with
a clutch 2-out single. Booze on First got the winning run to 3rd base in the
bottom of the 7th (Alexis Mullis) with 2 outs, but Kickelob Ultra’s defense was
able to preserve the tie by getting them to fly out to end the game.
Final Score: Booze on First 7, Kickelob
Ultra 7
Bundt Cakes (tropical blue) vs. Willy Wonkas Everlasting Balls (carolina blue):
Both teams came out firing with WWEB
drawing first blood in the top of the 1st inning. Craig Behler and Jasmine
Wells got on base with a pair of singles, and Dante Pilgrim would drive them in
for the 2-0 lead. In the bottom of the first, Bundt Cakes tied it up after Kyle
Pierson dramatically drove one deep for a 2-run home run, landing him on SportsCenter’s
neighborhood top 10 for the night. Boo-yah! The back-and-forth battle would
continue as each inning saw the lead change. WWEB would take the lead for good
in the final inning though to go up 7-3. Bundt Cakes tried to rally in the
bottom half of the inning, getting two more runs across, but WWEB’s defense
held off the comeback and got the huge W.
Final Score: Willy Wonkas Everlasting Balls 7, Bundt Cakes 5
Head sHot (cardinal red) vs. Balls to the wall (purple):
In this
week’s finale game, both defenses were playing strong and alert in the first
two innings. In the bottom of the 3rd inning, Nate Van Wingerden broke things
open for Head sHot with a precisely placed 2-RBI double to right field, scoring
Kristen McLavery and Brittany Stevenson to take a 2-0 lead. Two kickers later,
Braxton Finch did his best Trevor Story impersonation and booted an epic home
run bringing home Nate, making the score to 4-0. In the top of the 4th inning,
Balls to the wall got on the board thanks to a lead-off double from Danny
Rozell, who later scored after a scorching single up the hole by CheyAnne
Clemons. Head sHot would respond though, adding to their lead in the 6th inning
with five consecutive singles. Three runs would come in thanks to RBIs by Liz
Watts and Baylor Finch, who recorded his 1000th (kickball) career RBI on this
night, putting him in GKB hall of fame consideration.
Final Score: Head sHot 8, Balls to the wall 1
