Colorado Springs - Week 1 - Highlights

Bazinga (red) vs. Hashtag Balls (forest green):
A new season is upon us, but familiar foes took the field for battle in this first week of summer GKB. Bazinga didn’t surprise anyone in the top of the 1st inning, with their bunt and advance strategy working like a charm against the Hashtag Balls’ defense. Nate Kischer and Tim Menditto proved to be the formidable 1-2 punch at the top of the lineup for Bazinga, setting the tone for the rest of the team as they put up 6 big runs in the 1st. In the bottom of the 1st, Hashtag’s Big Hurt (Adam Huerta) led off with a single, and later came around to score on Holla Holla’s (Scott Holewinski) clutch 2-out RBI single. In the top of the 4th with the score 6-1, Bazinga would get a 1-out walk by Todd Brewer to put himself at 2nd base, and Shane Jahnke advanced to third. Brooke Grimshaw followed with a solid kick through the infield, scoring Todd and Shane on the play to put Bazinga up 8-1. Hashtag Balls made an attempt at a comeback in the bottom half of the 4th, scoring 2 more. They could have had more if it weren’t for Big Hurt and Farmer Brown (Jon McDonald) both being thrown out at home plate during the inning - you gotta love the aggressive base running though! Both teams held their own on defense for the remainder of the game, giving Bazinga their first win of 2016 as defending champs of the PPC.
Final Score: Bazinga 8, Hashtag Balls 3

The Freeballers (lime) vs. HeadShots (white):
New to the regular league this season but not new to GKB by any means, The Freeballers came out swinging against HeadShots in the 1st. Dylan Halford and Gemma Holdman led off with singles and would come around to score on an RBI single by Sean McWethy and a booming sac-fly by Chris Maloney. In the bottom of the 2nd, HeadShots’ captain Caleb Van Wingerden led off with a silky smooth double, and then scored on the next kick by Cortney Smith, cutting the Freeballer’s lead to 2-1. Flashforward to the 4th - HeadShots would get a pretty rally together by the top of their lineup to extend their lead. After getting the first three runners on base, clean-up kicker Baylor Finch did what he’s paid to do and drove in two with a double to give HeadShots a 5-2 lead. The Freeballers plated 2 in the 5th after an RBI double by captain Vinny Nocito to bring them within a run. HeadShots was able to hold off the attack though, retiring The Freeballers 1-2-3 in the final inning to preserve the close win.

Final Score: HeadShots 5, The Freeballers 4

The Freeballers (lime) vs. Fresh Kicks of Ball Air (black):
Final Score: The Freeballers win by forfeit 3-0
