Thursday Rocky Mountain Lake Park - Week 2 Highlights

Banzai Lightning vs. Don't Stop Ballieving

This was a great game to ref! Kudos to both teams.  Lightning got on the board first with a Justin Spanbauer RBI single in the top of the 1st inning. Ballieving would answer with a SAC fly from Jenna Huelskamp in the bottom of the 1st. We would remain tied for the next two innings even though both teams threatened often. Then in the top of the 4th inning, Lightning broke the tie with a single run with a solid team effort. Lightning was threatening again in the top of the 5th inning but Ballieving's first baseman Scott Huelskamp made a fantastic, not quite Willie Mays, over the shoulder catch to keep Lightning from scoring. Then in the bottom of the 6th inning, Ballieving played some small ball of their own and was able to plate the tying run, 2-2. Finally, in the top of the 8th inning, Lightning heard some thunder from the boots of Troy Terrill and Hunter Dunham. Terrill blasted a triple and  Dunham gave his team the lead with a HUGE SAC fly. That's all they would need with their tight defense. Banzai Lightning wins, 3-2 (in 8 innings).

Flour Power vs. Alcoballics

Power started this show with four runs in the top of the 1st inning. It could have been five runs but someone (who I will not name to help them save face) tried to stretch a triple into a HR and got out in the process. Ballics would then answer with three of their own runs in the bottom of the 1st inning, 4-3. Ballics tightened up their defense for the next two innings to keep Power off the board and at the same time was able to plate five runs across those same two innings, 4-8. This must have lit a little fire in Power because they scored four runs in the top of the 4th inning to tie the game, 8-8. Both teams ran out of offense steam and played some stellar defense which kept this game tied until the top of the 9th inning. One note worth example of this defense was the Ballics' Chuck Mariom turning a double play in the bottom of the 6th inning. After each team scored a single run in the 9th inning, we finally got a winner in the 10th.  Power took the lead 10-9 in the top half of the inning but Ballics found their third or maybe their fourth wind. With the game tied, Molly Nemer was the hero of the inning. She booted a SAC fly in which her teammate tagged up and scored from second base to win the game. Power made a great diving catch on her ball but the good base running was too much. Good game!!   Alcoballics wins, 11-10. (in 10 innings)

Grit vs. Stash 'n Lash

There must have been some gaping holes in these defenses because balls were flying everywhere!!! Grit scored in five of their seven at bats and Lash scored in five of their six at bats. Now that's what I call offense. Grit scored one in the 1st, one in the 3rd, four in the 4th, three in the 5th, and one in the 7th. These runs were highlighted by a Tommy Nichal  solo HR in the top of the 3rd inning. Now that is a lot of scoring but Lash was able to do even more. They scored four in the 1st, three in the 3rd, one in the 4th, five in the 5th, and one in the 6th. This offensive outburst was all started in the bottom of the 1st with a Justin O'keefe grand slam! Josh Eldridge found a hole in the bottom of the 3rd with a 2-RBI single. Sure defense wins championships, but chicks (and dudes) love offense. Good work to both teams! Stash 'n Lash wins, 14-10.

Rubber Balls and Liquor vs. Cause We Ball so Hard

I guess they lived up to their team name today. Hard's Scott Aller blasted a grand slam in the bottom of the 1st inning to give his team the lead. Normally if someone kicks a grand slam I'd say they are a sure thing to have had the best day but not in this one. T.J. Gerber was in beast mode. He booted a solo HR right after Aller's grand slam in the 1st, a 2-run HR in the 3rd, and a RBI double in the 5th. I'd call that in the zone. I'm not sure who pitched for Liquor but you might want to just walk him if you play these guys again. As good as their offense was their defense needs some work. Liquor was able to score one run in the top of the 4th inning and ruin what could have been a blowout. I have a feeling if these two teams play again it will be a little closer, Rubber Balls know how to bounce back!!  Cause We Ball so Hard wins, 9-1.
