Hashtag Balls (forest
green) vs. Our Captain Swallowed a Kickball (black):
Playing
their first game since losing Big Hurt for the season, Hashtag Balls came out
hoping to make the best of their remaining schedule. This one ended up being a
tight contest from start to finish. Pope (Joey McElvy) got things started in
the top of the 1st with a leadoff walk and scampered his way home after tagging
up from 3rd on an infield flyout by Professor (Adam Clark). Hashtag retired
OCSK 1-2-3 in the bottom half of the 1st, and added to their lead in the next
inning with a leadoff triple by Shallow Hal (Lawrence Halby) followed by an RBI
grounder by La’Trine (Catherine Wilson). OCSK would rally in the 2nd to tie the
game at 2-2 thanks in part to a solo jack to deep right field by pitcher Adam
Hills. In the final inning, Hashtag took a 5-4 lead but OCSK answered after a
leadoff walk by Shane Martin, who would make his way to 3rd base and score on a
strategically placed flyout to right field by Adam Hills.
Final Score: Hashtag
Balls-5, Our Captain Swallowed a Kickball-5
Head sHot (cardinal
red) vs. Bazinga (red):
Head
sHot was hoping to give Bazinga a run for their money after the beating they
took from Bazinga in last season’s semifinal of the PPC tournament. They would
get behind early however, after Bazinga put up 3 quick runs in the bottom of
the 1st inning thanks to a flurry of singles by the top half of their lineup.
Braxton Finch got Head sHot on the board in the 3rd after getting on base and
scoring on Brittany Stevenson’s single. Erik Blessman would get that run back
for Bazinga in the 5th however, scurrying home on Todd Brewer’s monster double.
Tony Swirka got Head sHot within 2 runs in the 6th after his RBI single, giving
Bazinga a scare, but not enough to give Head sHot the win.
Final Score:
Bazinga-5, Head sHot-3
Bundt Cakes (tropical
blue) vs. Booze on First (indigo blue):
Booze
on First came out swinging to start this matchup, getting their first five
runners safely on base including a 2-run homer by Jared Locke to take a 3-0
lead after one half. Bundt Cakes locked down on defense and sat down all three
kickers in the 2nd inning thanks to a stellar double play. Bundt Cakes tied it
up in the bottom half of the 2nd when Nicole Smith and Paresha Haley got back
to back leadoff singles and Afton Delvecchio brought them both home with a
booming single himself. In the top of the 3rd, captain Marc O’Meara gave the
lead back to Booze on First with the team’s second 2-run home run of the night.
Bundt Cake’s captain, Aaron Kennedy, tried to take matters into his own feet in
the bottom of the 3rd delivering a deep drive to the outfield, but was thrown
out at home plate trying to be a hero. Booze on first was able to hold off
Bundt Cakes’ comeback attempt in the final inning to take home the win.
Final Score: Booze on
First-7, Bundt Cakes-4
Kickelob Ultra (royal
blue) vs. Brews on First (navy):
Brews
on First came into week 3 hoping to solidify their status as elite ballers in
this spring season of GKB. Sam Schultz and Brayden Quarry were up to their
usual tricks in the first inning, both knocking out 2-run homers to open up a
4-0 lead. Kickelob struggled to find any room in the tight Brews on First
defense, going down 1-2-3 in the first three innings. Brews on First continued
to get runners on base and bringing them home, flexing their muscles along the
way. In the 6th, Zach Schultz cranked a booming double and scored two kickers
later on Sean McMillon’s double. Kickelob’s James Stuart would get a single and
advance to 3rd base, but Brews’ defense would hold him there, preserving the
shut-out.
Final Score: Brews on
First-10, Kickelob Ultra-0
Willy Wonkas
Everlasting Balls (carolina blue) vs. Balls to the wall (purple):
Balls
to the wall lived up to their name this week in a thriller against WWEB. Craig
Behler got WWEB on the board first with a 3-run bomb, but B2W answered with a
2-run homer of their own thanks to Danny Rozell’s club foot. In the top of the
3rd inning, Craig would strike again with his second 2-out home run of the
game. With WWEB up 6-4 after 3 innings, B2W would step on the gas pedal,
bringing 8 kickers to the plate and scoring 3 more to take the lead. Dominic
Rossi got WWEB back on top in the 6th with a deep shot to the outfield, but was
pegged out at home plate thanks to a great throw by the B2W pitcher.
Nonetheless two runners scored, and B2W found themselves down two runs in the
bottom of the 6th. But B2W plays best when they are up against the wall, and
with 2 outs they got clutch back to back doubles to take a 11-9 lead. WWEB
would attempt to rally in the 7th as they got a couple runners on base, but
would ultimately fall short due to a base running error to end the game.
Final Score: Balls to
the wall-11, Willy Wonkas Everylasting Balls-9
