Fort Collins - Week 5 - Highlights

City Park Field 1 (6pm)

Oilers (Violet) vs. high rollers (Ash Grey):
This game was undoubtedly the game of the week, but would it live up to the pre-game hype??!!! The high rollers had just suffered their first loss of 2016 in the previous week’s contest, and they were looking for a bounce back win. Meanwhile, the Oilers wanted to hold onto their #1 overall seed as we head towards the playoffs. Despite a very evenly matched contest, all it took was one inning for the Oilers to blow things wide open, and they came through in the 5th inning with two triples! Kickball analyst Chris Broussard commented after the game, “Just like the Warriors in the NBA finals, the high rollers are struggling on offense and they have some key defensive injuries as well. The Oilers on the other hand have star power equivalent to the Cavaliers, so they will be tough to contain down the stretch.” Oilers win 5-2.

City Park Field 2 (6pm)

Kickin Grass and Takin Names (Purple) vs. Kick It To the Limit (White):  Kickin Grass and Takin names pounced right away in the bottom of the 1st inning to score three runs, then they locked in their defense and called it a day essentially. Of course, there was one signature highlight—a one-handed jumping catch in the 5th inning. (See the highlight here!) Kickin Grass and Takin Names wins 3-0.

City Park Field 3 (6pm)

Merican Made (Red) vs. Little Lebowski Urban Achievers (Sport Grey): Could this be a Horsetooth Cup preview???!!! It was all the fans could talk about before the game… And afterwards, all the kickball aficionados could only sing the praises of game MVP Nick O’Connell from Merican Made. O’Connell score both of the runs for his team, but would it prove enough?!!? Yes, yes it would. Once again, the Merican Made pitching staff came to play and shut down the high-powered Little Lebowski Urban Achievers hitters. After the game, O’Connell could only sing the praises of his teammates, “If we keep up that level of defense, I know we can go all the way. Someone is going to come through each week on offense, so we might only need a run or two. This is going to be our year!” Merican Made wins 2-0.

City Park Field 4 (6pm)

Saved By The Balls (Lime) vs. Where My Pitches At (Neon Orange): Where My Pitches At Wins by forfeit 3-0. At least kickball is always fun no matter what, right?

City Park Field 1 (7pm)

A Swift Kick in the Grass (Irish Green) vs. Really Really RiKICKulously Good Looking (Carolina Blue):
Yikes! Don’t mess with the best! With Really Really RiKICKulously Good Looking continuing to climb the standings, they keep vanquishing anyone who stands in their way. This time it was a thundering eight run 3rd inning that destroyed the souls of A Swift Kick in the Grass. But the ESPN top 10 play of the week actually goes to Mathew Pavlik from A Swift Kick in the Grass—his jumping catch at second and throw to second for the out was high quality! (See the highlight here.) Pavlik even hit a home run in the final frame for good measure. Really Really RiKICKulously Good Looking wins 16-1.

City Park Field 2 (7pm)

Florida Mike and the Free Ballers (Texas Orange) vs. Kicktease (Neon Yellow):
Ties are like kissing your sister, right? Who even came up with that saying…? Weird. Anyway, high level defense was on display through all ten innings of this one, with Erik “Winner-Winner-Chicken Dinner” Weesner from Florida Mike and the Free Ballers making a sliding catch for a key third out and Charlie “I Love the Chocolate Factory” Mitchell from Kicktease coming through in the clutch for the last out of the game. Unfortunately, the offense was sterile from the 6th inning on, so after ten innings, the game ends tied 2-2.

City Park Field 3 (7pm)

Ballz N Dollz (Tropical Blue) vs. Kick Balls and Kick Grass (Tennessee Orange):
In this evenly matched contest, something had to give… Kick Balls and Kick Grass took a 3-2 lead in the 4th inning and tried to hold on for dear life! Meanwhile free agent pick up Cody Wells from Ballz N Dollz turned up the defense with a slick double play in the 5th inning to keep Ballz N Dollz close. Unfortunately, Ballz N Dollz historic two-game win streak would come to an end. Kick Balls and Kick Grass win 3-2.

City Park Field 4 (7pm)

Kickass Data Nerds (Charcoal) vs. Balls Deep (Navy):
Coming off a rough loss, you can really see the true character of a team shine through. Kickass Data Nerds didn’t disappoint as they jumped out to a 3-0 lead after the 1st inning. But then Balls Deep slowly scratched and clawed their way back into contention by narrowing their deficit to only one run going into the final inning. But those nerds stepped up and held on tight to squeak out a victory. Chad Cox, Captain of the Kickass Data Nerds, commented after the game, “We really wanted to prove to ourselves that we could bounce back in the face of adversity and we succeeded! Now we plan on keeping up this momentum through the playoffs. Here we come Horsetooth Cup!” Kickass Data Nerds wins 3-2.
