Kick in a Box (neon
yellow) vs Blackout (black):
In
the much-anticipated rematch of last season’s championship game, Kick in a Box
wanted to prove that they are the new team to beat in Colorado Springs. In the
1st inning after retiring Blackout 1-2-3, KIAB went to work with two
lead-off singles. Jake Strack Loerstcher cleaned up and brought everyone home
with a 3-run homer. In the 2nd, Blackout’s Shane Jahnke led off with
a solo homer, and Ryan Piper knocked in two more with a deep sac-fly to tie it
at 3. In the bottom of the 4th, Cody Eden sent Kendyl Pearce home
with a double, and then scored himself after a line drive RBI single by Tory
Boulton past a diving Ryan Piper at 3rd base. After KIAB stymied
Blackout’s attempts at scoring with a couple double plays on pop-ups in the 4th
& 5th innings, they held a 6-3 lead going into the 6th.
Blackout was able to pull within 2 when Demetrius Harris knocked in Ben Jones
on an RBI single, but KIAB responded in the bottom of the 6th with a
solo homer by Seth Dufendock to keep the 3-run lead. KIAB called in their All-Star
closer and World Series champion Greg Holland in the 7th, and he
shut down the Blackout attack to seal the win and earn his league leading 29th
save.
Final Score: Kick in a
Box 7, Blackout 4
Kick in a Box (neon
yellow) vs Code Brown (irish green):
Kick
in a Box kept their momentum in full swing heading into the 2nd game
of their double-header. In a bit of deja-vu from their first game, KIAB got
their two lead-off kickers on base, and this time Seth Dufendock brought them
home with a 3-run bomb. Later in the inning, Cody Eden continued his ball
bashing by sending one over the outfield for a 2-run homer. After all was said
and done, KIAB brought 10 kickers to the plate in the inning and scored 5 quick runs. Code Brown struggled to get an offensive flow going for most of the game,
with their closest chance coming in the 3rd when they got the bases
loaded with two outs. Code Brown’s Emily Prather sent a grounder into the
infield, but KIAB got the force-out on Vince Nguyen as he was heading home,
keeping the shut-out intact. With one last chance in the final inning, Code
Brown got three straight singles to load the bases with no outs. Vince Nguyen
brought home Nikki Amos with a RBI single to get on the board. Then KIAB called
in Holland again, and he retired the remaining Code Brown kickers by getting
all three to pop it up to the infield, giving him yet another save for the
night.
Final Score: Kick in a
Box 5, Code Brown 1
Pitch Please (neon
pink) vs Mediocre at Best (navy):
In
the finale of the week, Pitch Please started the action in the 2nd
when lead-off kicker Justin Collado booted a double and scored on Hannah
Fishman’s single. MAB quickly answered in the bottom half of the 2nd.
Cole Dougherty sent a bomb to right field for a RBI double, and Andrew
McPherson followed with another double to clear the bases and plate 2 more
runs. Then Greg Urbano sent a shot to the outfield, and after rounding 3rd
base, Pitch Please got the ball to the infield and pegged him out at home plate
to limit the damage to 5 runs. In the top of the 4th, Pitch Please’s
Mario Valencia led off with a double and Joe Aguirre brought him home with a
long single. In the bottom half of the 4th MAB put the pedal to the
floor again. After lead-off kicks by Kevin McLaughlin and Zach Schultz, Allie
Snatchko got a nice RBI single over the infield to make it 7-2. Then Adam
Huerta sent a monster shot to left field to score 2 runs, but attempted to
stretch the triple into a homer and got pegged out at home plate by Joe Aguirre
on a spectacular throw from 3rd base. Now down 13-2 in the 6th,
Pitch Please had a chance to start up the comeback by getting the bases loaded,
but MAB’s ace pitcher Zach Schultz got Mario Valencia to pop it up to the outfield,
ending the threat.
