Colorado Springs - Week 6 - Highlights

Kick in a Box (neon yellow) vs Blackout (black):
Blackout was looking to even the season series against Kick in a Box, while KIAB had their eyes set on an undefeated regular season. KIAB got it started in the bottom of the 1st after some uncharacteristic defensive errors by Blackout which allowed KIAB to load the bases with no outs. Tory Boulton followed with a sac-fly to score Cortney Brunner, but Blackout retired the next two to keep the damage to a single run. In the top of the 3rd, Lauren Frank sent a liner to the outfield for a 2-RBI single giving Blackout the lead. In the bottom of the 5th, KIAB’s Cortney Brunner said, “anything you can do, I can do better” and booted a 2-RBI single for herself to give KIAB a 3-2 lead. After a leadoff double by Blackout’s Ryan Piper in the top of the 6th, KIAB got out of the jam and ended the inning on a fly-out by Lauren Frank with the bases loaded. In the bottom of the 6th, KIAB rallied the troops and started pouring it on. With two runners on, Lorene Halford cleared the bases and in the process advanced to third on the play. Rex Ingham sent her home with a monster double, and then scored on Nicole Noblitt’s single to make it 8-2. With one final chance in the 7th, Andy Horn got a 1-out single and Lucas Bramble followed with a heroic homer to make it 8-4. Jillian Wilkins and Nate Kischer got on base to continue the 1-out rally, but KIAB got the next two kickers to fly-out to the outfield to seal the deal and give themselves the #1 seed and all the momentum in the world heading into the Pikes Peak Cup.
Final Score: Kick in a Box 8, Blackout 4

Pitch Please (neon pink) vs Kick in a Box (neon yellow):
Final Score: Kick in a Box wins by forfeit

Code Brown (irish green) vs Mediocre at Best (navy):
Mediocre at Best got their scoring started in the 2nd thanks to a giant 3-run home run by Greg Urbano clear over the center fielder’s head. Code Brown tallied a run in the bottom half of the 2nd with a RBI fielder’s choice single by Sean Rimmer to plate Kurtis Adams. In the 3rd, MAB started the inning with 2 singles and a walk to load the bases. Sam Schultz, up next, didn’t disappoint and sent a bomb to left field for the tasty grand salami, making it an 8-1 game. In the bottom of the 5th, Steve Wesselhoff did his best Giancarlo Stanton impersonation and slapped a 500 ft moon shot, rounding the bases before the defense was even able to retrieve the ball. MAB wasn’t done with their offensive prowess however. In the 6th, Trenton Miller booted a RBI-triple, Sam Schultz knocked in a run with a single, and Zach Schultz scored a pair with a sac-fly to cap a 5-run inning and seal the win. Despite Zach Schultz pitching a gem, Sam Schultz came out on top as the MVB (most valuable brother) this game, going 3 for 3 with 4 RBIs and 2 runs scored.

Final Score: Mediocre at Best 13, Code Brown 2

Fort Collins - Week 6 - Highlights

Greenbriar Park Field 1 (5:45pm)

Ballz n Dollz (Neon Orange) vs. Team America (Royal Blue):
Both teams were so scared of each other, that they didn’t want to show up and face the other one! That doesn’t mean there weren’t stellar plays though! Both Isaac Wallis and Alison Ford from Ballz n Dollz had amazing bobble catches. See the video replays here and here. Unfortunately for them though, Team America had just enough players to avoid the forfeit and claim the official victory. Team America wins 3-0.

Greenbriar Park Field 2 (5:45pm)

Oilers (Heliconia) vs. Balls and Dolls (Violet): Coming off of last week’s loss, the Oilers were ready to bring the heat! “Roaring” Russell Ehlinger really heated the game up in the top of the 3rd inning with a ground rule double, which helped his team nail 4 runs that inning. “All feet” Angela Smith transitioned the momentum to the Oilers defense in the bottom of the 6th inning with a jaw-dropping kick instead of a throw to first base for a solid out! With steady runs scored almost every inning by the Oilers, and Balls and Dolls only scoring one run in the 3rd and one in the 7th, there was just not enough offensive mojo to keep them in the game. Oilers wins 14-2.

Greenbriar Park Field 1 (6:45pm)

Florida Mike and the Free Ballers (Purple) vs. Flint Tropics (Neon Yellow):  Can you smell the upset brewing??? Florida Mike and the Free Ballers sure could! The Flint Tropics jumped out to an early lead, but their offense was quickly stifled by the combined defensive efforts of Florida Mike’s Meghan King, Brooke Brown, and Niki Weesner in the top of the 2nd inning. Then came Captain Brent Behler’s league-leading 20th home run of the season in the bottom of the 2nd to take the lead for Florida Mike and the Free Ballers! Behler’s surge in home runs this season should come as no surprise after his off-season training regime with hitting coach Barry Bonds. The Flint Tropics would come back to tie the game in the 4th inning off of a suicide squeeze by two-way threat Matt Dea. But then Florida Mike and the Free Ballers would surge ahead once again in the 5th and 6th innings! Finally, it came down to the 7th and final inning, and that’s when the defending champs stepped up to the plate (literally and figuratively) with a five score inning to narrowly avoid a big upset—what a game!!! Flint Tropics win 10-8.

Greenbriar Park Field 2 (6:45pm)

2 Legit 2 Kick (Navy) vs. Little Lebowski Urban Achievers (Ash Grey): Field 2 was on fire tonight and this game definitely kept ref Dane moving with all-star plays all game long. The second inning was a game changer with 2 Legit 2 Kick scoring 7 runs. Then “The Koodoo” Kossoris nailed the lid on the coffin with his “Straight Out of Greenbriar” home run in the top of the 4th inning. Little Lebowski Urban Achievers tried to crack 2 Legit 2 Kick’s strong defense, but plays like “Jumping” Jordan’s diving throw for an out at first in the bottom of the 3rd proved that they were impenetrable. Little Lebowski Urban Achievers rallied in bottom of the 7th inning with 5 runs scored, but 2 Legit 2 Kick had too large of a lead. 2 Legit 2 Kick wins 19-11.

Greenbriar Park Field 3 (6:45pm)

Kickin Grass and Takin Names (Sapphire Blue) vs. Cheba Hut (Green): With only 2 players showing up this week for Cheba Hut, we are starting to wonder if they are too busy making and eating sandwiches to come out and play kickball. Kickin Grass and Takin Names still got in a good practice and are ready to dominate the last game of the season next week before the tournament! Cheba Hut – will you show your faces next week??  - xoxo a curious Ballz and Dollz team. Kickin Grass and Takin Names Wins 3-0.

Fort Collins - Week 5 - Highlights

Greenbriar Park Field 1 (5:45pm)

Florida Mike and the Free Ballers (Purple) vs. Kickin Grass and Takin Names (Sapphire Blue):
This matchup featured two veteran squads, and they did not disappoint! Defense held strong through three innings, with the one and only Florida Mike Mangione completing a clutch double play at first base in the top of the 2nd to keep Kickin' Grass and Takin' Names at bay. Then came the top of the 4th inning when Bryan “The Slammer” Salimbeni finally broke through with a strategic pop up that scored two RBIs to get Kickin' Grass and Takin' Names on the board! Finally, they put on the defensive clamps with Bryan “Double Shot” Caffee’s flying squirrel catch as pitcher to put the kibosh on Florida Mike and the Free Ballers potential comeback in the bottom of the 6th inning. While Kickin' is used to taking names, they let Florida Mike keep his!  Kickin Grass and Takin Names wins 4-2.

Greenbriar Park Field 2 (5:45pm)

Cheba Hut (Forest Green) vs. 2 Legit 2 Kick (Navy):
Low on players Cheba Hut unfortunately had to forfeit, but that didn’t stop these two teams from sticking around for a practice game. Even official Bright Shirt Dane Sr. got some rolls in for a fun night of good ole kickball. Both teams will be flipping into next week so their opponents had better be ready. 2 Legit 2 Kick wins 3-0.

Greenbriar Park Field 1 (6:45pm)

Ballz n Dollz (Neon Orange) vs. vs. Balls and Dolls (Violet):
There were a lot of Balls and a lot of Dolls in this game, but only one winner! The old timers, Ballz n Dollz, jumped out to an early lead after scoring four runs in the top of the 1st inning with some extremely impressive ball placement. But by the 2nd inning, the newcomers--Balls and Dolls--would begin their comeback with a solo home run by Mark “Lanky Foot” Langford. By the end of the inning, Balls and Dolls would have put up ten runs! Ballz and Dollz never backed down though, with defensive MVP Alison Ford “Tough” completing two key outs in the bottom of the 3rd. Then Ryan “The Undertaker” Unangst for Ballz n Dollz knocked home two RBIs it the top of the 6th to make things interesting. Unfortunately, the power of the 80s was stronger than the Emojis in this one. Balls and Dolls win 17-7.

Greenbriar Park Field 2 (6:45pm)

Team America (Royal Blue) vs. Oilers (Heliconia):
In the most highly anticipated game of the week, Team America’s Jaime “Fuego” Fulgencio kicked off his team’s lead with a Grand Slam in the bottom of the 2nd inning, totaling seven runs scored for the inning. The Oilers tried to close in on the six-run gap with Billy Miles’s top of the 4th inning three run home run but it wasn’t enough. Team America wanted the win and made sure more of their players crossed home plate than their opponents. Garret Dean, captain of the Oilers, commented after the game, “Both Team America and us were missing some key players tonight. We look forward to a matchup in the postseason with both squads at full strength!” Team America wins 16-11.

Greenbriar Park Field 3 (6:45pm)

Flint Tropics (Neon Yellow) vs. Little Lebowski Urban Achievers (Ash Grey):
With the “Top Dogs” (aka the Flint Tropics), playing in this game more runs were projected, but both teams really stepped up their defensive efforts which made scoring tough. From the beginning, Little Lebowski Urban Achievers let it be known that their defense was sturdy with a Darren “Diver” Ashton’s bottom of the 1st out of this world diving catch preventing the Flint Tropics from scoring. Courtney Norgren’s bouncy catch in the bottom of the 3rd continued to keep Flint Tropics off the scoreboard. Finally, in the bottom of the 4th, Monica “Big Moment” Gomez’s single RBI provided the momentum for Flint Tropics offensive push. The Flint Tropics were somehow able to make magic happen as they pulled ahead with a three-run lead. Another Flint Tropics lady stand-in sealed the three inning defensive shut out with a sticky hand catch between first base and second base for the third out of the top of the 5th inning. Flint Tropics win 5-2.

Colorado Springs - Week 4 - Highlights

Kick in a Box (neon yellow) vs Blackout (black):
In the much-anticipated rematch of last season’s championship game, Kick in a Box wanted to prove that they are the new team to beat in Colorado Springs. In the 1st inning after retiring Blackout 1-2-3, KIAB went to work with two lead-off singles. Jake Strack Loerstcher cleaned up and brought everyone home with a 3-run homer. In the 2nd, Blackout’s Shane Jahnke led off with a solo homer, and Ryan Piper knocked in two more with a deep sac-fly to tie it at 3. In the bottom of the 4th, Cody Eden sent Kendyl Pearce home with a double, and then scored himself after a line drive RBI single by Tory Boulton past a diving Ryan Piper at 3rd base. After KIAB stymied Blackout’s attempts at scoring with a couple double plays on pop-ups in the 4th & 5th innings, they held a 6-3 lead going into the 6th. Blackout was able to pull within 2 when Demetrius Harris knocked in Ben Jones on an RBI single, but KIAB responded in the bottom of the 6th with a solo homer by Seth Dufendock to keep the 3-run lead. KIAB called in their All-Star closer and World Series champion Greg Holland in the 7th, and he shut down the Blackout attack to seal the win and earn his league leading 29th save.
Final Score: Kick in a Box 7, Blackout 4

Kick in a Box (neon yellow) vs Code Brown (irish green):
Kick in a Box kept their momentum in full swing heading into the 2nd game of their double-header. In a bit of deja-vu from their first game, KIAB got their two lead-off kickers on base, and this time Seth Dufendock brought them home with a 3-run bomb. Later in the inning, Cody Eden continued his ball bashing by sending one over the outfield for a 2-run homer. After all was said and done, KIAB brought 10 kickers to the plate in the inning and scored 5 quick runs. Code Brown struggled to get an offensive flow going for most of the game, with their closest chance coming in the 3rd when they got the bases loaded with two outs. Code Brown’s Emily Prather sent a grounder into the infield, but KIAB got the force-out on Vince Nguyen as he was heading home, keeping the shut-out intact. With one last chance in the final inning, Code Brown got three straight singles to load the bases with no outs. Vince Nguyen brought home Nikki Amos with a RBI single to get on the board. Then KIAB called in Holland again, and he retired the remaining Code Brown kickers by getting all three to pop it up to the infield, giving him yet another save for the night.
Final Score: Kick in a Box 5, Code Brown 1

Pitch Please (neon pink) vs Mediocre at Best (navy):
In the finale of the week, Pitch Please started the action in the 2nd when lead-off kicker Justin Collado booted a double and scored on Hannah Fishman’s single. MAB quickly answered in the bottom half of the 2nd. Cole Dougherty sent a bomb to right field for a RBI double, and Andrew McPherson followed with another double to clear the bases and plate 2 more runs. Then Greg Urbano sent a shot to the outfield, and after rounding 3rd base, Pitch Please got the ball to the infield and pegged him out at home plate to limit the damage to 5 runs. In the top of the 4th, Pitch Please’s Mario Valencia led off with a double and Joe Aguirre brought him home with a long single. In the bottom half of the 4th MAB put the pedal to the floor again. After lead-off kicks by Kevin McLaughlin and Zach Schultz, Allie Snatchko got a nice RBI single over the infield to make it 7-2. Then Adam Huerta sent a monster shot to left field to score 2 runs, but attempted to stretch the triple into a homer and got pegged out at home plate by Joe Aguirre on a spectacular throw from 3rd base. Now down 13-2 in the 6th, Pitch Please had a chance to start up the comeback by getting the bases loaded, but MAB’s ace pitcher Zach Schultz got Mario Valencia to pop it up to the outfield, ending the threat.

Final Score: Mediocre at Best 13, Pitch Please 2

Cheba Hut (Forest Green) vs. Little Lebowski Urban Achievers (Ash Grey): Both Cheba Hut and Little Lebowski Urban Achievers showed up to play tonight! Cheba Hut scored three runs in the top of the 1st , but this was immediately echoed by Little Lebowski Urban Achievers in the bottom of the 1st with Logan Rutt’s out of this world 3-run HOME RUN! It was the play of the game! Little Lebowski Urban Achievers kept their steam running strong in the 2nd inning with 8 runs scored pushing them into double digits. Cheba Hut continued a strong effort on offense and scored 4 runs in the 4th, but their defense couldn’t stand up to Little Lebowski Urban Achievers – the team was on fire! Cheba Hut’s Sean Murphy had a Ground Rule Double that boosted their offensive effort. The holiday weekend may have made some folks tired, but it left Little Lebowski Urban Achievers rejuvenated and hungry for runs! Little Lebowski Urban Achievers wins 22-9.

Greenbriar Park Field 2 (5:45pm)

Florida Mike and the Free Ballers (Purple) vs. Oilers (Heliconia): Sometimes kickball is heavy on runs, sometimes it is more of a defensive game, and that is exactly what this game was all about - neither team tonight was going to make scoring an easy task! The Oilers took the lead with Kyle Kusmick’s first RBI of the night in the top of the 3rd, then Florida Mike and the Free Ballers immediately responded with their own single run in the bottom of the 3rd. That’s when the legs of the Oilers started to heat up in the 4th with three runs scored, providing a little bit of a cushion but not enough for Florida Mike and the Free Ballers to lose hope. Kusmick went on to take MVP of the night, with crowning achievement coming in the bottom of the 6th on a double play throw from third to first base. The Oilers pulled ahead in the top of the 7th with another three runs scored to solidify their win! Oilers wins 7-2.

Greenbriar Park Field 1 (6:45pm)

2 Legit 2 Quit (Navy) vs. Flint Tropics (Neon Yellow):
Flint Tropics have been crushing all season long and with a three-week winning streak on the line, the stakes were high! “Flint Tropics Retiree” in his orange shorts and cool glasses made sure to have an outstanding play in his last game with a TRIPLE!  The game started out a bit slow, but Flint Tropics finally accelerated to full speed in the bottom of the 4th scoring nine runs and showing 2 Legit 2 Quit what champions are made of. 2 Legit 2 Quit pitcher Jordan Ehrlich gave it his all at the rollers mound, but the Flint Tropics’ lead was too great for 2 Legit 2 Quit to close the gap. Next week hopefully 2 Legit 2 Quit can get more runs in! Flint Tropics wins 21-3.

Greenbriar Park Field 2 (6:45pm)

Team America (Royal Blue) vs. Balls and Dolls (Violet):
With both teams coming off wins in week three, this was sure to be a nail biter! Team America immediately let Balls and Dolls know that they were here to play with Jarred Peterson’s lead off solo homer in the top of the 1st! With three runs scored, Team America took the field and showed Balls and Dolls just how strong their defense was with by not allowing any runs in the 1st-3rd innings. Taylor Nichols made an awesome high pop catch in right field in the bottom of the first, solidifying Team America’s defense. Emily Brandt from Balls and Dolls also had a great “sticky hand” catch in right field in the top of the 3rd.  Balls and Dolls had a slow offensive warm up, but by the bottom of the 4th they were on the scoreboard. Balls and Dolls reinforced their defense by the top of the 5th and completely shut out Team America for the rest of the game. Jozy Altidore (also known as Ross Johnson) from Team America walked away with the MVP honor for tonight’s game. Team America wins 9-5.

Greenbriar Park Field 3 (6:45pm)

Ballz n Dollz (Neon Orange) vs. Kickin Grass and Takin Names (Sapphire Blue):
Kickin Grass and Takin Names knew that this was a big game. With both teams sitting at 2-1 records this contest would really have an impact on the league rankings! Ballz and Dollz only allowed one run to score in each the 2nd and 3rd innings, proving their defense prowess could stand up to Kickin Grass and Takin Names.  However, Kickin Grass and Takin Names takes the gold for most runs scored this week! Kickin Grass and Takin Names wins 23-9.

But then Team America answered immediately in the bottom of the 1st inning after Jared “The Jumper” Peterson knocked in a RBI with two outs, and followed it up with some fancy foot work on the base paths for a score of his own. Mark Langford smashed a three-run homer, Morgan Jones impressed everyone with a no-look-over-the-back toss to third base for an out, and then Ian “The Beautiful Angel” Schroff nailed a home run for the cherry on top. After the game, kickball analyst Wolf Blitzer had this to say: “The top story for this season is the rise of Balls and Dolls—will they be able to challenge the perennial contenders? Will they be able to refine their step up to the plate, literally and figuratively? Only time will tell!” Balls and Dolls wins 22-1.

Greenbriar Park Field 1 (6:45pm)

Greenbriar Park Field 3 (6:45pm)

Ballz n Dollz (Neon Orange) vs. Florida Mike and the Free Ballers (Purple):  This was just some good, old-fashioned, bump and grind kickball action! Nothing fancy, just back to basics, down and gritty, tit-for-tat, kickball stratergizing. Ballz n Dollz took an early lead 2-0 after the top of the 1st, but Florida Mike and the Free Ballers, with their two game winning streak on the line, would make things interesting by the 4th inning, with the score still just 5-3 in favor of Ballz and Dollz. Jeremy Glanzer, captain of Ballz n Dollz, commented after the game, “Florida Mike and the Free Ballers really put up a fight in this one, but we are a really confident squad this season. There was no slowly down the attack though, and KIAB continued to rally in the 2nd, loading the bases with no outs. In the 3rd, KIAB started the inning with 5 consecutive singles to make it 14-0. Then Rex Ingham came up to kick and cleared the bases, and he decided to stretch a triple into a home run but was pegged out by the pitcher as he attempted to slide home, giving Pitch Please one small moment of glory for the game. Pitch Please tried to rally in the 5th, when Joe Aguirre booted a double to get runners on 2nd and 3rd, but Justin Collado was unable to bring them home, grounding into a fielder’s choice to end the game in a shut-out.
Final Score: Kick in a Box 17, Pitch Please 0

Pitch Please (neon pink) vs Code Brown (irish green):
Pitch Please was seeking to salvage their night with a win, and they got off to a good start in the 1st when Joe Aguirre scorched another double, this time plating a run. Rebecca Spelich followed with a single to score Joe from 2nd base on the play, giving Pitch Please an early 2-0 lead after 1. In the top of the 3rd, Pitch Please struck again, thanks to two lead-off singles and a RBI single by Max Betten to help build the lead to 4-0. Heading into the bottom of the 6th down 6-0, Code Brown strung together a 2-out rally with some very timely and well-placed kicks. Drew Bettlach and Sean Rimmer booted back to back RBI doubles, and Kim Gerlach followed with a solid RBI single through the gap to bring it to 6-3. Final Score: Pitch Please 6, Code Brown 3

Mediocre at Best (navy) vs Blackout (black):
This was by far the most dramatic game of the season so far, as both teams played their hearts out as if it was the championship game of the tournament. It started out as a defensive battle, neither team getting any offense going through 4 innings. In the 5th, Mediocre at Best got on the board with some small ball, getting the bases loaded with a walk and some singles by Trenton Miller and Zach Schultz. Kevin McLaughlin sent one to shallow left field for a fly-out, but Trenton scored on the tag-up, and Kristin Porter followed with a RBI single to make it a 2-0 game. In the top of the 6th, Blackout immediately answered by loading the bases themselves with a mix of bunts and fielder’s choice groundouts. Demetrius Harris delivered with a 2-out 2-RBI line drive that found its way to the outfield. It was still tied at 2 after 7, so we headed to extra innings. With 2 outs in the top of the 8th and runners on 1st and 2nd, Blackout’s Nate Kischer sent a scorching liner down the 3rd base line to score Jay Patton. Then with the bases loaded, Lauren Frank sent a blooper to shallow right field, scoring Shane Jahnke and Nate to make it a 5-2 game. MAB’s Trenton Miller led off the bottom of the 8th with a bomb over right field for a standing triple. Then Kyle Pilipovich and Zach Schultz both sent grounders to third base, but Nate Kischer chose to hold Trenton on at 3rd base instead of attempting to get the outs at 1st base. MAB would make Blackout pay, getting a double and single to bring the deficit to 1 run. Still no outs and with the bases loaded, Adam Huerta sent a moon shot to the outfield for a sac-fly to tie the game at 5. With one last opportunity with 2 outs and runners on 1st and 2nd, Kevin sent a high kick to center field but the ball was dropped, and the runner at 2nd scored giving Mediocre at Best the comeback walk-off win

Final Score: Mediocre at Best 6, Blackout 5
